W.S.E.T Diploma level course

Winematters Diploma programme commenced in September 2007.

After more than a decade at the helm, Charles Garrett announced his retirement. Charles did a magnificent job, first establishing the course and subsequently guiding dozens of students through the rigorous Diploma syllabus. Determined to maintain this distinguished tradition, Winematters recently appointed Sophie Rudge as Principal Lecturer for our W.S.E.T. Diploma programme.

Sophie is herself a Diploma graduate and a winner of the Waitrose Scholarship.

The course will be run in much the same format as before. Teaching will be shared between Michael Palij MW and Sophie Rudge.

TUTOR

Charles has kindly agreed to continue to assist Winematters in the capacity of consultant and will continue to update our now-famous course notes in addition to ensuring that the very highest standards are maintained. Sophie will assume responsibility for leading the tasting sessions, assembling the wines, marking the tasting notes and liaising with the W.S.E.T. Michael will lead both the blind tasting workshops and the Italian seminars. Between the three, you’ll be in very experienced hands.

FORMAT

Winematters will continue to offer numerous advantages over other course centres including:

  • Small group size

WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT US

“If the Intermediate Certificate is a Sunday afternoon stroll and the Advanced Certificate a vigorous hike, the WSET Diploma is a serious climb in the Alps.  Why would anyone in their right mind put themselves through such a demanding challenge?  Perhaps it is because there is real satisfaction in developing your tasting technique to a professional standard; because the WSET’s approach makes you understand how what you have in your glass is the complex expression of geography, history, chemistry, biology and many other factors; and because the Diploma makes you engage with wine as a business as well as a pleasure.  And for sure there is a lot of pleasurable tasting to be done along the way.

You wouldn’t want to climb this mountain without an experienced guide.  The Winematters tutors are exactly that.  They coach you intensively in your tasting technique; they provide comprehensively detailed notes and reading material; they support your research by supplying access to relevant articles; they coach you in exam technique, mark practice essays and set mock exams.  It isn’t easy to pass the Diploma, but a lot easier if you have Winematters’ support.”

Philip Carpenter, non trade

“The course focuses on wine tasting and appreciation, not jargon or faffy technical detail. We all love the product, and it has been a refreshing change to further my knowledge in an environment of enthusiasm for the liquid gold.  A great combination of fun, learning and enlightenment.”

John Chapman, Oxford Wine Company

“We use Winematters for our Diploma training because of the direct support for our partners and the quality feedback provided to them by the course tutors. The supporting materials are excellent and invaluable to students as they work through their training.”

Carol Easton, Head of Training, Waitrose Ltd.

“WineMatters have achieved excellent results in all levels of WSET qualifications with results consistently above the Global average.”

Michael Walpole, Business Development, WSET
