This course builds on the knowledge and tasting skills acquired from the Introductory Wine Appreciation Course and continues with a clear focus on developing effective tasting technique. Successful students will be able to describe the production methods and organoleptic characteristics of a broad range of high-quality wines and spirits from around the world.
The course will be hosted jointly by Dr Karen Hyde AIWS (Diploma in Wine & Spirits) and Mr Michael Palij, Master of Wine.
Who it is aimed at:
Candidates must be over 18 or have obtained parental consent. Students should either have attended the WineMatters Introductory Wine Appreciation course or hold the WSET Intermediate level 2 or be able to demonstrate knowledge at Intermediate level through completion of equivalent courses or have sufficient experience in the wine and spirit industry.
The Advanced course is considerably more difficult than the Introductory level and candidates are reminded that a significant amount of home study is required.
Optional WSET Advanced certificate examination:
Candidates need to successfully complete 2 papers: a theory examination of 50 multiple choice questions and five short answer questions (1 hour 45 mins), plus a blind tasting examination of two wines (30 mins). Please note that candidates who do not have photographic ID with them may NOT sit the exam.
Students showing exceptional talent may be awarded a Distinction, and the top students are invited to a viva voce examination held annually in London. This qualification is accredited at Level 3 in the UK National Qualifications Framework. The WSET issues certificates directly to those who pass the examination.
